Tips for Making the Best Vegan Mashed Potatoes

Here are a few tips to make sure your mashed potatoes turn out creamy, fluffy, and full of flavor:
  1. Choose Gold Potatoes for Extra Creaminess
Gold potatoes have a naturally buttery flavor and creamy texture, so they’re perfect for mashed potatoes. They don’t require a lot of extra fat to taste indulgent, which makes them a great base for vegan recipes.
  2. Warm the Plant Milk and Broth
Adding warm (rather than cold) liquids to the potatoes helps keep them creamy and fluffy, preventing them from getting gummy. I like to froth the plant milk for even more creaminess—it’s a simple trick that makes a big difference.
  3. Use a Potato Ricer or Masher
A potato ricer is my go-to tool for the smoothest mashed potatoes, but a good potato masher works well too. Just be careful not to over-mash, as it can make the potatoes gluey.

Kitchen Tools You’ll Need

Making perfect mashed potatoes is easy with these kitchen tools:
  1. Potato Ricer or Masher
Using a ricer or masher keeps the potatoes fluffy and smooth, avoiding the risk of over-mashing them.
  2. Large Saucepan
A big pot is ideal for cooking the potatoes evenly. Make sure to use enough water so they cook through without drying out.
  3. Whisk or Frother for Plant Milk
A small whisk or frother works well for warming and frothing the plant milk, adding even more creaminess to the final texture.

Health Benefits of Vegan Mashed Potatoes

Not only are these mashed potatoes delicious, but they’re also packed with nutrients that are great for your health, especially for supporting immune function and skin health.

  1. Potatoes for Vitamin C and Potassium
Believe it or not, potatoes are a great source of vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant that supports immune health and helps keep skin looking radiant. A study from Oregon State University highlights the importance of vitamin C in collagen production, which is essential for maintaining healthy skin as we age. Potatoes are also high in potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure and supports heart health.
  2. Vegan Butter and Mayo for Heart-Healthy Fats
Swapping out dairy with vegan butter and mayo adds a hint of richness while keeping it plant-based. Vegan mayo, often made from ingredients like canola oil or avocado oil, can provide healthy monounsaturated fats that support heart health. Research from Harvard Medical School shows that plant-based oils rich in monounsaturated fats can lower LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.
  3. Plant Milk for Calcium and Smooth Texture
Using unsweetened plant milk not only makes these mashed potatoes creamy but also adds a little calcium. Many fortified plant milks contain calcium and vitamin D, which are essential for bone health, especially as we get older. The National Institutes of Health supports the use of calcium-rich foods for maintaining strong bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

These Vegan Mashed Potatoes are seriously the best way to enjoy that creamy comfort without the dairy! They’re light, fluffy, and have the perfect hint of richness. Give them a try and see how they elevate any meal, from holidays to cozy weeknight dinners. Let me know if you try them—I’d love to hear how they turn out!
