Christine Avanti: BioGaia - The Trusted Name in Probiotic Products
Probiotics are live microorganisms (in other words, bacteria) that are similar to helpful bacteria found in the human digestive tract. Probiotics are commonly known as "friendly bugs" or "good bacteria". Probiotics are available to consumers in the form of dietary supplements and foods such as yogurt. I recommend the BioGaia line of probiotic supplements for infants, children, and adults. DISCLOSURE: I have a relationship with the US distributor of BioGaia so I have an interest in promoting these products. However, they are the finest I have found.
Probiotic: How do I choose a product?
There are many foods and supplements on the market that claim to contain probiotics so which should you choose?
I recommend looking at the following criteria:
The package should inform you which probiotic bacteria and which strain it contains
Information on the package should tell you the documented effective dose
Information on the package should tell you the best-before date of the product and storage conditions to deliver the most effective usage
The health benefits of the probiotic strains should be documented in well-controlled human studies and published in scientific journals.
Most of us don't bother to look in depth at label claims or research studies to support them. There are a lot of probiotic products on the market. By law, in order to make the claim on the product label the probiotic must be in the product at the time it is packaged. But remember, a probiotic is a live bacteria. If it dies before it enters into your digestive tract, it isn't giving you any benefit. In order to benefit from a probiotic it not only needs to survive until you ingest it but it has to survive the digestive acids in the stomach as well.
BioGaia is special because it is formulated to do exactly that. That is why BioGaia has become such a popular product worldwide: it really works.
